William’s amazing journey to India would prove to be just the beginning of a missionary quest filled with hardship and heartache as well as tremendous victories.
Often referred to as “the father of modern missions,” William Carey displayed a single-minded determination to set his face like a flint to the task of bringing the gospel to those lost in darkness. His life of service and sacrifice is a guidepost for Christians of all generations.
“Expect great things from God, Attempt great things for God.” – William Carey. I was really inspired by this man who was uneducated but taught himself Latin and Greek in order to study knowledge and his faith. He truly gave up all he had to move to India and despite persecution and hardship, many years toiling in India without converts, he remained faithful and God used all of that in amazing ways!
One thing that stood out to me about William Carey was how despite many burdens he carried, he didn’t allow any of that to hinder his work for God. His wife was someone who didn’t share in his heart for India. His missionary coworker constantly spent everything they had, and constantly Carey was penniless sometimes running out of food to feed his family. But despite all this, William Carey struggled, persevered, and fought on to make the most of every opportunity to share the gospel with the Indians eventually establishing the first mission base in India, college for Christians, and printing and translating the bible into the local dialects, only a few of the things he accomplished!
